Seafarers International Relief Fund launches fund to help India’s seafarers

Overview

As the COVID-19 crisis in India intensifies, seafarers and their families need help from the industry. The Seafarers International Relief Fund (SIRF) is establishing a fund to respond to the increasing and desperate needs of seafarers resulting from the pandemic.

The pandemic continues to spread across India and SIRF has recognised that practical and emotional welfare support will be needed in many guises for Indian seafarers and their families. SIRF has been in contact with its teams on the ground in the country and through surveys with key stakeholders to get an understanding of the needs and the situation.
The Fund believes the situation will go on for many months and believes that as the virus mutates, there will be new outbreaks with new needs across the world. The new Fund will be responsive to the needs of seafarers wherever they are in the world, in line with the international remits of the charities involved.

The Emergency Appeal is therefore being coordinated by The Seafarers’ Charity and is supported by The Mission to Seafarers, ISWAN, Sailors’ Society, and other charities, working alongside all key industry players who will make a difference to support Indian seafarers and their families. Funds raised will be distributed to the supporting charities.

The Fund will be administered and overseen at no cost by The Seafarers’ Charity (formerly Seafarers UK). All donors will receive a copy of the impact report produced at the end of the year to show where the funds have been spent.

The Bunker Alerts are not intended to be an evaluation of overall bunker quality in the port or area concerned, but usually highlight a specific parameter within the fuel which has raised a quality issue.
