BIMCO and ASBA kick off work on gas tanker voyage charter party

Overview

BIMCO and the Association of Ship Brokers & Agents (U.S.A.), Inc. (ASBA) on 25 June kicked off a project at the BIMCO House to develop a standard gas tanker voyage charter party, codenamed ASBAGASVOY.

At the meeting, a joint BIMCO/ASBA subcommittee began discussions on the basis of a draft amended version of the widely used tanker charter party ASBATANKVOY, presented by ASBA. The subcommittee is in the process of identifying what changes are necessary to make the new form appropriate for the chartering of tankers for LPG, anhydrous ammonia and chemical gases, while maintaining the familiarity of ASBATANKVOY.

The subcommittee developing the new form includes representatives of ASBA (Søren Wolmar), BW Group (Stephen Harper), Clarksons (Tommy Baggio), Nordisk Legal Services (Magne Andersen), Petredec (Elwin Taylor) and Thomas Miller P&I (Europe) Ltd (Sumit Madhu).

“We have made good progress already and work is going according to plan,” said Søren Wolmar, chairman of ASBA’s Documentary Committee and ASBA co-chair of the subcommittee, adding:

“I am glad to see that ASBA and BIMCO share a common interest in developing a form that builds on ASBATANKVOY. This will no doubt assist the form in gaining acceptance in the market.”

Stephen Harper, Head of Legal, Shipping at BW Group and BIMCO co-chair of the subcommittee said:

“The ambition is to make this the preferred voyage charter form for the gas tanker industry and I feel confident that we can make a significant contribution towards that goal.”

At the meeting, the subcommittee completed an initial review of the ASBA draft and identified a number of issues for further discussion. Drafting work will continue at the next meeting of the subcommittee which will be held on 5-6 September in London.
