Overview

The Charter Party Workshop (Masterclass) Online is a series of 10 online sessions and combines a range of lecturers on voyage and time chartering with sessions on related day-to-day issues and troubleshooting.

What will you learn?

Some of the topics you will learn:

  • How does it all fit together? The legal relationships created between the commodity sale contract, the shipping contract and the insurance market.
  • Voyage chartering: the duty of the carrier to provide a seaworthy ship to be able to carry the cargo.
  • Voyage chartering: When time matters: proceeding with utmost dispatch and without deviation. But what rights and obligations does the carrier have?

The shipowner’s duties: To provide a seaworthy ship, to properly and carefully care for the cargo, to proceed with reasonable dispatch, cancellation clauses, deviation, slow steaming clauses.

The charterer’s duties: Full and complete clean and sound cargoes, payments of, freight / deadfreight, port nominations, to provide all port restrictions (draft, air draft, etc) at the loading and discharging ports before fixing.

Laytime and demurrage: NOR validity, types of laytime, when does laytime start to run? What suspends laytime? When does laytime stop? Demurrage, damages for detention, time bar clauses.

Dangerous cargo: What is “dangerous”? When does notice need to be given? The basis of “liability” under the Hague and Hague- Visby Rules. Who is liable?
Safe ports:
What is a safe port? When is a port to be safe? What is the extent of the charterers’ duty?

Course certification

Participants will be given an option of taking a final assessment (one-hour open-book test) at the end of the course, and Certificate of Achievement will be issued with a grade (distinction, merit or pass). Those not taking the assessment will receive a Certificate of Attendance.

BIMCO issues electronic course files as an Adobe PDF file enabling you to make personal notes. All documentation and presentations will be in English. Course access details will be provided once the registration is completed.
