Please complete the Stable Seas Piracy Survey

Overview

In response to growing concerns about piracy and armed robbery in the Gulf of Guinea, BIMCO is working closely with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and Stable Seas, an international non-governmental organisation, to calculate the costs of maritime piracy and armed robbery in the Gulf of Guinea to West and Central African nations.

Unlike previous efforts to calculate the financial costs of piracy, which have focused primarily on costs borne by foreign militaries and international shippers, this report will highlight the costs to African governments and coastal communities over the last 10 years. Specifically, the goal of the report will be to estimate the economic costs to regional governments based on both altered shipping patterns and to document lost opportunities for economic growth and investment in the maritime sector. It is expected that this report will support new diplomatic efforts in the UN and other agencies to eliminate the threat of piracy and armed robbery at sea in this region.

The short 5-minute survey in the attached link will provide important information and viewpoints from ship owners and operators. The results will be anonymous, but those who would like to add further information are encouraged to contact the researchers directly.

VPS Bunker Alerts

Veritas Petroleum Services (VPS) publish regular Bunker Alerts based entirely on fuel samples and have kindly permitted BIMCO’s Members to access this information.

The Bunker Alerts are not intended to be an evaluation of overall bunker quality in the port or area concerned, but usually highlight a specific parameter within the fuel which has raised a quality issue.
