New Consortium will help enable the maritime digital revolution

Overview

A Maritime Connectivity Platform Consortium (MCC) has been launched to enable the development of the Maritime Connectivity Platform (MCP) and thereby help facilitate the digitalisation of the maritime sector.

MCP is a communication framework enabling efficient, secure, reliable and seamless electronic information exchange between all authorized maritime stakeholders across available communication systems.

The MCC was established on 8 February 2019 and could become an important framework for digitalisation of maritime sectors such as within e-navigation, various maritime logistics, sea traffic management and Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships.

The MCP is an open and vendor-neutral technology, a digital maritime domain, that brings common internet standards to maritime navigation and transportation systems. The Platform supports the e-navigation initiative of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), but the ambition is for the platform to support the digitalisation in the Maritime domain at large. It also supports users in using digital services to exchange public and private information. Commercial and non-commercial institutions can become providers of the platform, using installations of the MCP.

BIMCO took part in one of the projects behind the MCP; the EU funded project called EfficienSea2. The project’s overall objective was to improve the safety of navigation and increase commercial efficiency at sea by using the different existing e-navigation technologies. BIMCO’s contribution was to develop, test and implement administrative e-maritime solutions for ship reporting, and for transferring port information between maritime stakeholders.

The MCP Consortium consists of the following non-commercial organization: OFFIS, Germany; KRISO, Peoples Republic of Korea; RISE, Sweden; University of Copenhagen, Denmark; and general lighthouse authorities of UK and Ireland.

The Danish Maritime Authority (DMA), Swedish Maritime Administration (SMA) and the Ministry of Ocean and Fisheries of the Republic of Korea (MOF) are joining the Consortium as Governmental Observers.

VPS Bunker Alerts

Veritas Petroleum Services (VPS) publish regular Bunker Alerts based entirely on fuel samples and have kindly permitted BIMCO’s Members to access this information.

The Bunker Alerts are not intended to be an evaluation of overall bunker quality in the port or area concerned, but usually highlight a specific parameter within the fuel which has raised a quality issue.
