BIMCO representatives from the Maritime Information Department have attended the 5th session of the International Maritime Organization (IMO)’s Sub-Committee on Carriage of Cargoes and Containers (CCC 5), held at the IMO London headquarters from 10 to 14 September 2018.
The Code of Safe Practice for Cargo Stowage and Securing (CSS Code) is open for reduction of specified ship accelerations considering the restricted sea area, the season of the year and the duration of the voyage, but gives no guidance on how the reduction could be calculated.
The short sea shipping trade, particularly the North Sea and Baltic ferry services, has successfully applied a reduction model for weather-dependent lashing during the last decades. The majority of shipments under this regime has been performed in sea states with significant wave heights not exceeding 3 m in the Baltic and 5 m in the North Sea. Most cargoes carried in these sea areas fall under the regime of "semi-standardized stowage and securing" so a sustainable solution should therefore be pursued by using the established procedure of Short Sea Shipping.
The work on the CCS Code Weather-dependent Lashing will be carried forward by a correspondence until the next session of CCC 6 in 2019, and a report on the outcome of the meeting will be published upon IMO releasing the formal report of the CCC 5 meeting.
Veritas Petroleum Services (VPS) publish regular Bunker Alerts based entirely on fuel samples and have kindly permitted BIMCO’s Members to access this information.
The Bunker Alerts are not intended to be an evaluation of overall bunker quality in the port or area concerned, but usually highlight a specific parameter within the fuel which has raised a quality issue.
