BIMCO is a founding member of the FIT (Future International Trade) Alliance, a cross-industry coalition of organisations working together to produce open standards for electronic trade documents. The key objectives of the FIT Alliance are to raise awareness and accelerate adoption of a standards-based electronic bill of lading (eBL) across all sectors of the shipping industry: a universal eBL.
A universal eBL would benefit all stakeholders involved in the global supply chain whether in bulk shipping or container shipping. By way of example, achieving 100% adoption of a standards-based eBL in the container shipping sector would benefit not only this sector but the global economy and the planet.
The purpose of this survey is to address the usage of eBLs. Each year, there are almost 50 million bills of lading issued and originals are required in many cases to be flown from place of issue to place of destination. EBLs are designed to eliminate many of the inefficiencies of using paper documents.
This survey is about Original Bills of Lading, not about seaway bills.
This survey is being administered by the FIT Alliance in collaboration with Boston Consulting Group and the HKUST Li & Fung Supply Chain Institute. The primary aim of the survey is to gather insights from stakeholders on the relevant topic in a strictly confidential manner.
