Mandatory application of the Bauxite Fines schedule: applies only to Bauxite Fine cargoes containing particle size distribution (PSD) as follows: (1) more than 30% of fine particles less than 1 mm ( D30 < 1 mm) and (2) more than 40% of particles less than 2.5 mm ( D40 < 2.5 mm). Bauxite Fine cargoes having this PSD can still qualify as a Group C cargo if the shipper can provide to the master, a certificate stating that the moisture freely drains from the cargo so the degree of saturation is not liable to reach 70% based on result of test approved by the competent authority of the port of loading (refer to 1.6 of appendix 2 of the IMSBC Code).
Description: reddish brown to brownish-yellow. Clay-like and earthy mineral. Not soluble in water. Bulk density: 1,100 - 2,000 kg/m. Non-IMSBC Code information: Bauxites, within limits, are composed of similar minerals; namely, gibbsite, boehmite, kaolinite, quartz and hematite. Depending on where bauxites come from and the method of processing, there are large differences in the PSD and in terms of appearance, can be described as ranging from silt with much gravel to silty gravel with sand and cobbles and the particle shape ranges from spherical and round to angular.
