February 2019

The new digital BIMCO Bulletin is out

The new BIMCO magazine the “Bulletin” is out. The February issue looks at the financial side of 2020, offers the latest market analysis from Chief Shipping Analyst, Peter Sand and talks to the UN about smuggling. Also, BIMCO’s Secretary General, Angus Frew, calls for naval support in the Gulf of Guinea in his foreword.

BIMCO demands 4th IMO GHG Study based on realistic economic growth

BIMCO has proposed that the Fourth International Maritime Organization (IMO) Greenhouse Gas Study does not include unrealistically high gross domestic product (GDP) growth projections to predict future transport demand - and thereby emissions - of the shipping industry. The proposal has been made to the expert workshop preparing for the study, which is meeting in London 12-14 March.

Polish Szczecin is top bulk terminal in new BIMCO report

The best performing port, in BIMCO’s Dry Bulk Terminals Vetting Report 2018, is Szczecin in Poland. The report collected input from 144 ships covering 381 terminals. A total of 97% of the reports were rated as average or better, which gave an average rating of 3.6 (out of five). The result is a marginal better than last year’s results.

EU, China and the U.S. needs to support counter-piracy operations in the Gulf of Guinea – BIMCO

Piracy in the Gulf of Guinea is an unacceptable burden to seafarers and shipping companies. Around 40 ships have been attacked in the Gulf of Guinea in the past 12 months. Most recently, six seafarers were kidnapped from the MSC Mandy, which was on the way to Lagos, Nigeria. BIMCO asks, on behalf of its members, that maritime powers increase their presence and expand their collaboration with local states to curb piracy.

China has not yet placed a full ban on open-loop scrubbers

Chinese regulators have updated part of its domestic emission control area (DECA) regulations with effect from 1 January 2019 but has not yet placed a full ban on open-loop scrubbers as reported widely.

Newbuilding contracts should require use of Shipdex

BIMCO and MAN Energy Solutions hosted a conference for software suppliers delivering Computerised Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) to expand the use of Shipdex. Shipdex is the standard protocol for exchanging technical data - such as manuals – electronically between supplier and ships directly, cutting the need for huge stacks of - often outdated - paper manuals.

BIMCO publishes two 2020 sulphur clauses

BIMCO has published two sulphur content related bunker clauses which are now available on the BIMCO website and on SmartCon, BIMCO’s contract editing solution.

Industry publishes improved cyber guidelines

The third edition of the industry cyber risk management guidelines, Guidelines on Cyber Security Onboard Ships, addresses the requirement to incorporate cyber risks in the ship’s safety management system (SMS). It also reflects a deeper experience with risk assessments of operational technology (OT) - such as navigational systems and engine controls - and provides more guidance for dealing with the cyber risks to the ship arising from parties in the supply chain.

November 2018

The new digital BIMCO Bulletin is out

The new BIMCO magazine the “Bulletin” is out with articles covering the effect of the US-China trade war, the 2020 sulphur limit and the challenges of ship recycling and ballast water management. “The shipping industry is taking major steps and making huge investments to be ready for (2020) compliance. It is only fair that the nation states party to Annex VI of the MARPOL Convention live up to their end of the agreement,” BIMCO’s Secretary General, Angus Frew, points out in his foreword. Also, read the latest market analysis by Peter Sand and read why now is the wrong time to do business as usual as the trade war rages on.

BIMCO aims to publish cyber security clause in spring 2019

BIMCO is developing a clause dealing with cyber security risks and incidents that might affect the ability of one of the parties to perform their contractual obligations.
