Shipping industry launch the Gulf of Guinea Declaration on Suppression of Piracy

The attacks on merchant ships in the Gulf of Guinea by Nigerian pirates must end. So far, 99 maritime companies, organisations and flag states, including BIMCO, have signed the Gulf of Guinea Declaration on Suppression of Piracy, which was launched today.

BIMCO, the world’s largest shipping association, has elected Sabrina Chao of Wah Kwong Shipping Holdings Limited as President at the organisation’s online general meeting on Thursday 20 May 2021.

Round Table Shipping Organisations Highlight Key Issues for the Maritime Industry

Leaders of the Round Table of International Shipping Associations - BIMCO, INTERCARGO, International Chamber of Shipping and INTERTANKO - met virtually last week to debate key issues facing the maritime industry today. At the meeting, the associations affirmed the industry’s commitment to universal recognition for seafarers, the decarbonisation of shipping and addressing the threat to shipping from piracy in the Gulf of Guinea.

BIMCO has joined the Neptune Declaration on Seafarer Well-being and Crew Change, and was encouraged to see the first publication from the Together in Safety initiative. The initiatives signal the need for increased collaboration in the face of great challenges.

BIMCO floating storage clause for tankers: what to cover

The practice of charterers using oil tankers for floating storage is certainly not a new concept. What’s different with the current demand for storage is the huge number of ships being time chartered for floating storage purposes due to the collapse in oil prices, partly as a result of COVID-19. Therefore, BIMCO is receiving enquiries about “floating storage” clauses and questions about what additional wording owners should consider adding to their time charters.

New publication offers updated maritime security guidance for mariners operating off West Africa and the Gulf of Guinea

Industry organisations, supported by government and military organisations, have worked together to produce a new publication that will help mariners detect, deter and delay external threats to their safety. Best Management Practices to Enhance Maritime Security for Vessels & Mariners Operating Off the Coast of West Africa including the Gulf of Guinea (BMP WA) consolidates and enhances existing guidance for specific threats in this region.

Round Table to organise joint meeting on Gulf of Guinea piracy

The Chairpersons of the Round Table of international shipping associations (RT) met in Rome in February to discuss current issues including piracy in the Gulf of Guinea.
