This entry includes the following ores carrying their official Bulk Cargo Shipping Name (BCSNs): (1) iron concentrates, (2) zinc concentrates, (3) lead concentrates, (4) copper concentrates, (5) nickel concentrate; (6) zinc and lead middlings concentrates; and (7) pyrites and a host of others. Please refer to section " IMO Classification" below for the full BCSN list of the various ores that are listed under the IMSBC Code's generic entry "mineral concentrates".
These mineral concentrates are ores that have been "refined", i.e., the valuable components are enriched by removing the bulk of waste materials. Concentrates may carry a considerable moisture content which is normally regulated by the exporting country. Concentrates like lead and zinc concentrates are normally of dark brown, heavy, soil-like material, which are not flammable nor combustible under normal conditions of transport and storage. Copper concentrate is usually dark green and of extremely fine powder. The concentrates are used in the production of their respective metal and alloys. Pyrites is a term given to a variety of sulphide ores, especially of iron. Also known as iron pyrite or fool's gold, they are usually brass-coloured and used for the manufacture of sulphur, sulphuric acid, sulphur dioxide, etc.
